# Joel Ray Senior Common Room ![Joel Ray](/sites/g/files/omnuum9706/files/styles/hwp_4_5__480x600/public/winthrop-house/files/joel_ray.jpg?itok=2mR4JwLi) email As an Army family, we re-stationed 17 times prior to my attending Harvard College (‘73) majoring in marine biology. Work at the IFEM chambers to 1400 feet, culminated in my Harvard thesis: “Role of Multiple Inert Gases in Hyperbaric Diving” and a path to Chief of Neurosurgery at Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego. In addition to my clinical neurosurgery practice I had the opportunity to participate in teaching positions at the Tri-Service USUHS, UCSD, and now Rowan-Virtua SOM. My neurosurgery career spanned more than 40 years, tens of thousands of patients and surgeries, extensive IP and patents and working with many instrument manufacturers. Photography grabbed my passion leading a varied history from shooting for AP, Projects Photographer for Congresswoman JoAnn Emerson, juried fine arts photographer at the Rockport Art Association and Best of Missouri Hands. Further from 2003-2013 I was a gubernatorial appointed member of the Missouri Arts Council. In addition to participating in the SCR program, I am a senior advisor to the Harvard Computer Society: Tech and Global Health Initiatives. Further, I serve as a mentor in the HMS Programs: Biomedical Sciences Career Program and New England Science Symposium. These offer high school, college and medical students participation and networking in career development. We are also working on medical intellectual property (IP) and technology transfer (Patenting to production),where I have an extensive background and resource accesses.
