Just prior to that, based on my Harvard College senior thesis, I served as a staff writer and economist on the President’s Commission on an All-Volunteer Armed Force (the Gates Commission). Following release of the Commission’s Report, which recommended an all-volunteer armed force, I became Director of the National Council to Repeal the Draft. I worked hard to try to influence Congress not to extend the draft authority. The draft law expired on June 30, 1973. No American has been drafted in the ensuing 50+ years. After graduating from Harvard Law School, I was appointed a Lecturer on Economics, and specialized in antitrust and regulated industries. I practiced law in two Boston law firms. I was appointed Chief Counsel, and subsequently Director, of the State Insurance Rating Bureau for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, where I worked hard to regulate the business of insurance in the public interest, including reforming auto insurance and assuring reasonable rates. I spent two years as Special Counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Antitrust and Monopoly, where I focused on insurance matters, including trying to repeal that industry’s antitrust exemption. I became in-house counsel to a group of companies in insurance and financial services in Boston, where I continue to work today. I have traveled extensively, including to countries ranging from Egypt to India to Indonesia, assisting governments with their insurance laws and regulations. I currently work hard preserving a big old house in Beverly, where I moved after living for many years in a historic building in Cambridge. While I no longer play squash on the Winthrop House intramural team, I lift weights vigorously and ran the Boston Marathon.
