Hey there Winthrop! I’m Zakir, and I’m very excited to join the House as a language NRT. I came to Harvard last year as a PhD student in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, having previously studied at Oxford and in the likes of Amman, Tehran and Istanbul. Here I study Arabic, Persian and Turkish literature, speak these languages fluently and would love to chat in or about any of the three. Whether you’re starting from scratch, a heritage speaker, or looking to refine your proficiency, I’d love to work with you! I’m just as happy to delve into the good old material (Classical Arabic, Persian poetry) as I am with the new: MSA, modern dialects, Iranian cinema, Turkish folk music, Islamic culture, and beyond. Middle Eastern languages not edgy enough? Let’s try Hindi-Urdu! That neither? Punjabi? Ottoman or Chaghatay Turkish? Let’s talk! I’m also passionate about roadmapping and working through the process of applying to graduate programmes and fellowships here, the U.K. and Europe, and further afield, in addition to cultivating good writing, both creative and academic.
