As an Army family, we re-stationed 17 times prior to settling in Penfield, NY. I attended Harvard and explored the ocean depths through mentorship with Howard B. Fell (Museum of Comparative Zoology) and with Dr. Chris Lambertson (co-inventor of the aqualung) at the Institute for Environmental Medicine (University of Pennsylvania) as a chamber operator for hyperbaric dives to 1400 feet, while researching my Harvard thesis. My Navy Medical School scholarship (University of Buffalo) introduced me to neuroscience while working with the new device called the Computed Tomography (“CT”), scanning brain lesions. I went into neurosurgery, after mentorship by Charles Wilson, MD at UCSF and completed a surgical internship and neurosurgery residency at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD. The Admiral awarded me the Navy Achievement Medal for being the sole neurosurgeon on the ward, treating 70+ patients continuously for six months[JR1] .

My neurosurgery career spanned more than 40 years, tens of thousands of patients and surgeries, and

Patty (Health Law) and I (Neurosurgery) recently retired to our ancestral home in Gloucester, MA. I enjoy and look forward to hosting visitors from Winthrop house.

[JR1]I don’t know whether this is right
