Traditions

Winthrop House has many long-standing events and programs that develop and enhance residents' community experience. Below are a few of these traditions. Please see the Winthrop House calendar for upcoming events.

Music & Mingles

One of Winthrop's most known traditions, Music & Mingles (M&Ms) are held monthly in the Beren Rooftop Common Room. Each month showcases talents of the Harvard community. If you would like to perform during an M&M, please contact the House Administrator.

Study breaks

Resident Tutors host study breaks for their entryways. Study breaks are an opportunity to connect with peers and take a step away from coursework. If you have ideas for study breaks, please reach out to your entryway Resident Tutor.

Open Houses

Throughout the academic year the Faculty Deans host open houses. These events typically are held within the Faculty Deans residence where students are able to connect with the House team and peers.

Community Night Dinners

Every Thursday night, dinner in the Dining Hall is just for members of the Winthrop community (and Currier students, Winthrop's sibling House in the Quad). These community nights are a great chance to get to know other Winthrop residents!

Community Holiday Dinner

During December Winthrop hosts an All-House holiday dinner. The dining hall is transformed into an elegant space for the night. Students are able to enjoy themed foods, drinks and desserts. There are musical performances by the Winthrop community and secret snowflake gift exchange and ugly sweater contest.

HoCo Events

Your awesome House Committee organizes many signature events throughout the year, including weekly Steins, Throptoberfest, formals, and more!

Housing Day

As one of the major highlights of the spring semester. With the lead of our HoCo, Winthropians prepare signs, banners, and events to welcome the rising Sophomores.  The morning of Housing Day, Winthropian storm the Yard.  The new Winthropians are invited to events and programs at Winthrop to introduce them to life at Winthrop and the greater House community.

Sophomore Orientation and Welcome

Sophomores are the future of Winthrop House! The House organizes several important events throughout the year to help you get acquainted with your new surroundings.

Soon after you arrive in the fall you'll have the chance to go on the sophomore outing, where the entire sophomore class gets a chance to meet each other and the Winthrop House Team, including the Faculty Deans, Resident Dean, and resident tutors. It's a great start to the year!

Senior Casino Royale

Complete with poker, blackjack, roulette, and other games of chance, Casino Night is a chance to look classy and try your luck.

Perini-Woods Memorial Speaker Series

Winthrop alumni John J. Cullinane AB '86, MBA '93 and William Thorndike AB '86 established the David B. Perini and Robert W. Woods Memorial Endowment Fund. This endowment honors their Winthrop House roommates, David Perini and Bob Woods, who both passed away in their twenties. The first guest for the Perini-Woods SCR Speaker Series was Joseph P. Kennedy III, congressional candidate and grandson of Winthrop alum Robert F. Kennedy, on April 5, 2012.
