Community Rules

Noise Guidelines

  • Quiet hours are weekdays 11pm-8am and weekends 2am-8am
    • (Even outside quiet hours, excessively loud noise is not appropriate.)

Smoking (including Marijuana)

  • Smoking represents a safety threat (fire), causes health problems (allergies, asthma, cancer), and is a public nuisance (odor).
  • Smoking (including vaping) is prohibited within Winthrop, both inside the buildings, in the courtyards, and within 20 feet of the buildings.
  • Smoke passes easily between rooms due to the ventilation system, and it is a major annoyance to neighbors. Repeated offences will lead to disciplinary action and a requirement to move out of Winthrop. Please don’t do it, not even once.

Drugs & Alcohol

  • Harvard expects its students and employees to maintain an environment that is safe and healthy. The unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol are violations of University rules as well as the law.
  • The College does not tolerate drug dealing or distribution because of the dangers it brings to the community. Marijuana possession is a violation of federal law and remains prohibited on Harvard property.
  • Drugs are both a health issue and a disciplinary matter. If you are involved with any drug-related incident, the Resident Dean will meet with you to discuss the next steps, including a referral to the office of Alcohol and Other Drug Services (AODS).
  • Providing alcohol to anyone under 21 years of age is a violation of the law as well as Harvard policy. You can find the drug and alcohol policies in the Student Handbook.
  • Winthrop students who chose to drink alcoholic beverages are expected to do so responsibly, and ensure that their guests do the same. As hosts, students are responsible for the behavior of their guests. We must uphold the laws of the Commonwealth and the College, and expect that students will work with House staff to maintain a fun and safe environment for all activities in Winthrop.
  • Help-Seeking Policy: When you bring an intoxicated or drug-impaired student to HUHS or a hospital or seek staff assistance (including from Winthrop staff including Securitas and HUPD), neither you nor the friend will face disciplinary action from the college for having used or provided alcohol or drugs.

Trash

  • Keep hallways and stairwells clean so that your neighbors and custodians do not have to deal with your garbage. Don't leave boxes, furniture, scooters, or anything else in the hallways.
  • Avoid build-ups of trash and recycling in your suite because this will attract mice, bugs, and other pests, and cause unpleasant odors.
  • The Building Management team has vacuums and trash bags in the Security Office to help you keep our House clean. Bring trash, recyclables, and composting to the trash rooms in the basements of Standish, Gore, and Fairfax.

Absences

  • If you have to leave campus for an extended period of time, please let either your tutor or the Winthrop Res Dean know. It’s important for us to know where you are in case of emergencies.

Guests

  • Guests are allowed for brief stays only (no more than two nights). The consent of other occupants of the room is always required. A “guest” is anyone who isn’t assigned to the room or suite.
  • Students who wish to have non-Harvard student guests stay for more than two nights must ask permission of the House staff. This is a safety measure to protect the community.
  • Food may not be shared with or given to those who are not on a board contract or who have not paid for the meal.
  • See https://dso.college.harvard.edu/policies/residential-life for additional policies for overnight guests.
